Kerala Style Meat Cutlets and The Story of My Disastrous life

Hemanth – the great , yetΒ  again gave me a wonderful opportunity to conduct yet another lovely interview. Now, how amazing is that?

And I had come home in search of some peace, only to realise that my brother was having a meltdown as he feels my sis and I are not doing anything to save him! He only has a few days left until the last day for confirming his seat! For God’s sake he is a guy! Why the hell is he crying like that?…Hell this is I say! Not one day in this house has passed in peace.

“Will you just shut up now!” It wasn’t me..looks like even Vicky wasn’t in the best of her moods today.

“Someone figure out a plan then,” Poor guy, doesn’t exactly seem to be in a very good shape.

“See, some of us here have bigger problems than careers..for example…some of us here don’t exactly know if her wedding will take place or not!” And there she goes off wailing like a baby! As if one wasn’t enough!..

“Vicky! What are you telling? Can you eloborate?” I ask in shock..

“Sam and I had an argument today which made me say some teeny weeny bits of hard stuff,” well from her wonderful expressions I know it wouldn’t have been so simple….

“I think I need to talk to Sam, if I really want a better picture of what exactly happened.”

Oh god! Like seriously? Why the hell is my life so annoying? All my other colleagues seem to have quite normal siblings and are in fact happy when they are with them. Sam finally picked up. After 13 calls………

“Yes Cassie, how can I help you?” Was he crying too? IsΒ it like the Cry day or something? Ufffffz!

“Hey Sam! I just called about the catering stuff for the bachelor’s party. You remember you told me to look for some? ”

“Oh yeah..But I don’t think we need it now.” He is sounding so dull and dejected.

“You found other caterers?”

No reply..

“Sam? You there?”

“Oh..yes..yes and no I didn’t find any. I have a long time to party now anyways as I’ll probably have toΒ be a bachelor all my life, so why shouldn’t I just postpone it?”

What the hell is this mad guy blabbering? Hahaha. Shut up Cass . don’t laugh! Hehehee. .

“Why do you say so?” I try hard to control my laughter..

“Ask your sis, Cass!. She fought over the colour of napkins for the dining table. She finally told me to go with my choice and forget her!”

I started laughing, literally rolling on the couch. This was crazy! If only Vicky ever had toΒ face half the troubles I have to face each and every day of my life. Actually thinking about it, my sister and brother always have had a much easier life than I ever have. They have always been happy. This was the first time ever that Jerry has hadΒ to go against Dad’s wishes. But otherwise everything has happened according to his wish. Vicky is totally out of the question. Smoothest life someone could ever experience. Then, there I was, like a black sheep in the herd. Always in a different world. Shoved at with all the possible bad lucks and destinies that ever existed. Ray was probably the second ever best thing and the best out of the lot that has ever happened to me. But that also didn’t seem to last that long. And Avi…his name still gives me the shivers. Ever since I laid my eyes on that cursed frame, something inside me has been unlocked. It’s giving me these weird vibes. I want to vent out that anger and frustration that has piled up inside me for so long.

“Ruth, I’ll be waiting for you..You better be there..” Again those horrible words and that horrible voice of his, rings in my stupid head! Four years have gone by and yet I remember it like yesterday. I don’t know who has given my brain that authority to decide what to store and what not to. I can still feel his excitement and see that spark in his eyes that he had had thatΒ day….As I had mentioned, Avi was my senior. On the last day of his college, he finally asked me out. I had spent so many nights picturing that day, and when it happened, it was a gazillion times better than in my dreams. Those were the best times ever. Happiness, love, friendship and youth! What more could I ask for?

Eventually Avi got placed in a very good Bussiness school pretty close to college. A year from then had gone so beautifully, that I never realized it was about to end. The two months after collegeΒ had kept me soΒ busy with my entrances, that I failed to realized Avi was disturbed with something. One fine day after my admission in a good business school, that too in Bangalore, I decided to take Avi to our favourite restaurant. It was like the cherry on top ofΒ a cake. MBA wasn’t my concern, but the very thought of being in the same city as Avi made me rejoice to the fullest. Who knew what was going to come?….

“Cass, dinner is served!” Vicky was yelling on top of her voice from the dining room.

Sheesh! I totally forgot about cooking today with all these things running in my head!

“Coming!”

“Come fast you people! We have to get upΒ early for Church and Cass you have to meet Evana too! Don’t forget like last week. So let’s eat fast, then search for clues to help Jerry and sleep early.”

Oh Yes!! I had almost forgotten! Evana!

After dinner, all of us put our whole energy into searching! We weren’t going to rest until we found something. Just then Vicky gives this excited shriek! There it was! Dad’s old diary among his old, ancient belongings! Who knows what it has in store for us? We decide to open it after Church as we were dead tired… I also wanted to cook something in the morning, tomorrow, since Evana will be coming for lunch….

********************************************
I literally jumped out of the bed when my alarm rang…The best way to get yourself out from your bed is to keep the song you hate the most as the alarm….

I felt blank when I opened the fridge! What should I make?? Probably some red meat! It’s been a while since I cooked some, ever since the first day Ray challenged me…OMG Ray! Why is he so adamant! I wish I could slap him..

Ingredients:
1. Any red meat minced- 1/4 kg (250g ) I used beef. You can use mutton, pork belly too. Only the cooking time may differ.
2. 2 inch ginger piece chopped finely
3. 1 green chilli chopped finely
4. Salt to taste
5. 7 to 8 garlic pods finely chopped
6. Pepper- 1/2 tsp
7. Garam masala- 3/4th tsp
8. 1 large potato boiled, peeled and mashed
9. Chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
10. 2 sprigs of chopped cilantro
11. Breadcrumbs
12. 1 beaten egg with a little salt

METHOD:
Mince the meat finely. I did it at home.

image

Chop the garlic, chillies and ginger.

image

Transfer the beef and the chopped garlic, ginger and chilli to a pressure cooker. Add required amount of salt.

image

Add water, so much such that the meat is immersed. This prevents the meat from getting burnt at the bottom. Fix the whistle and keep for 2 to 3 whistles.

image

Turn off after 2 to 3 whistles. Let it cool down. Open the cooker, add a tablespoon of oil, turn on the gas stove and keep on high until all the water evaporates and the meat roasts a bit.

image

In a bowl, add the mashed potatoes, cumin, chilli and garam masala, pepper, salt and cilantro.

image

Add the cooked beef to the bowl and mix well.

image

Separate into 9 equal parts. Pat into 1.5 inch diameter circles with 1.5 cm side thickness approximately.

image

Dip these in the beaten egg and roll in Breadcrumbs. Seal the egdes well. Refrigerate for at least 1/2 an hour.

image

Deep fry, such that we get a deep golden brown colour on both sides. You can also shallow fry these.

image

My phones starts ringing, just as I place them into the fridge.

Am I dreaming or what? Ray was calling me! Omg omg omg!!!!

……To be continued

    1. Thanks Indu☺☺☺ Glad you liked them….yes you can boil the meat and then grind it in a mixer or processor instead of mincing before…but in this method you get these very minute chunks while taking a bite and I love that texture!

  13. Such delicious fried cutlets Lina! This chapter was full of mysteries and cliffhangers…like the rest of the story with Avi at the restaurant and Ruth’s dad’s diary. Can’t believe the story is going to wrap up soon–it’s been so much fun to read. I’ll miss it when it’s finished, but I’m also very excited to see how everything wraps up and to find out the missing pieces! πŸ™‚
